Who can be nominated and how?
- Bank of Scotland is providing everyone with the opportunity to nominate somebody who has made a difference to their local community and who inspires others.
- For example, the neighbour who’s always helping others in the community; the coach for their dedication to helping young athletes; the mum who ran a marathon to raise money for charity; the teacher who runs the after school clubs... and many more.
- The public nomination campaign runs until 12 September 2011
- Nominations can be made online via www.bankofscotland.co.uk/carrytheflame
- People will be asked to tell us, in less than 150 words, about the difference the person they are nominating has made in their community
- Nominations will be posted on the Bank of Scotland website where they can be viewed by the public and shared via Facebook, Twitter or email to inspire others to nominate
- Video nominations can also be made via the taxi video booth on the Bank of Scotland Olympic Torch Tour
How will winners be selected?
- Nominations will be reviewed, a shortlist created and Torchbearers will be selected at random from that shortlist.
Supporting Information:
Bank of Scotland Ambassadors for London 2012 Sir Chris Hoy and Katherine Grainger nominate inspirational people to carry the Flame
To inspire the public to nominate, four-time Olympic Gold Medallist Sir Chris Hoy has made public his own Torchbearer nominations. The first is for an unsung hero from British Cycling, Geoff Cooke, whose competitive career spans six decades and who was the National coach for ten years. The second is for 94 year-old Andy Coogan, a World War II veteran and former champion middle distance runner from Carnoustie who missed the chance to fulfil his athletics potential because of the war, but who still supports and coaches runners today. Both represent people who have made a difference in their local communities and whose story will inspire others.
Sir Chris said: “It’s great that Bank of Scotland is bringing the Games closer to local communities and inviting the public to nominate someone to carry the Olympic Flame. I urge everyone to nominate and recognise the people who’ve made a difference to their local community.”
Triple Olympic Silver Medallist Katherine Grainger has chosen to nominate Ken Davis, her art teacher at school.
Katherine said: “My journey towards becoming a three-time Olympic silver medallist didn’t start with a boat or paddles. Strangely it started at Bearsden Academy where I was taught karate by Ken, or Mr Davis as he was then.
He was such an inspirational teacher and the things I learnt in karate with him helped me develop hugely as a person – from him having a huge amount of faith in me at a stage when I didn't yet have that in myself, to teaching me about dedication, focus and achieving my goal while still having fun.
He does such a lot for the local community, all in his own time, that it would be great for him to carry the Torch next year when it makes its journey around the UK.”
